Toothaches among young children may be painful indeed, but
are these incidences actually painful enough to make them miss school?
According to a recent survey, it’s possible that toothaches and other
dental problems rooted in poor dental hygiene are the main cause for
children skipping a day or two from school.
More than 30 Percent
In
a recent survey, more than 30 percent of parents admitted that their
children, aged between 6 and 12, missed school due to dental problems.
Among them, 18 percent of children missed half a day at school, while
four percent missed one day. Another four percent had to skip two days
at school, while six percent had to miss three or more days.
Another
study conducted in Los Angeles conducted an in-depth analysis on the
effect of dental problems among school children. In the study,
researchers were able to conclude that children who have had recent
tooth pain are four times more likely to have low grade point averages,
aside from missing more days of school.
Avoiding Dental Problems
Fortunately, all of these can be avoided simply by practicing and
encouraging proper dental hygiene. Make sure that your children brush
and floss regularly, and limit their intake of sugary foods and drinks.
To make sure that your child will not suffer from any dental problem
during the school year, regular visits to the dentist is a must.
